Although some of my colleagues complain that this text may not be the most scholarly edition of these works, at least this book begins by attempting to join together many different Sir Gawain legends so that students may see the medieval construction of this hero come to light. Unlike his more French counterpart, Lancelot, Gawain is the flour of chivalry with a not-so-pure twist. This book lays out several medieval texts so that students can discover for themselves the unique brand of "courtesy" Gawain exemplifies. An excellent read for those who simply adore this quirky Arthurian hero as well. (A working knowledge of Middle English is not really necessary as the glosses in the margin are quite extensive.)
