5 out of 5 stars Powerful, Vivid, Beautiful   April 29, 2008

The Politics of Stupid is a powerful and vivid book that serves the reader on multiple levels. TPOS is one part expose, meant to peel back the corrupt layers of the relationship between the food industry, government and consumer, and one part inspiration, urging women to take their bodies and minds back from the greedy industries and dirty politics that have misled them.

Powter advocates a lifestyle of whole, organic foods, physical activity, and conscientious choices. While healthy eating and increased activity may not be new messages, it's the infusion of conscious, intentional choices that sets Powter's message apart. Her program of Eat, Breathe, Move and Think does not begin and end with an improved diet or with exercise, but instead urges women to become fully aware of all the choices they make. In doing this, the reader discovers that there is no "end", but instead a workable blueprint for a lifetime of health, fitness, and intentional, educated choices.

While some critics have accused TPOS of being a feminist or "political rant", the obesity epidemic in America is, by way of published studies and statistics, a crisis born of both politics and industry, and its primary targets have been the female consumer. While other health advocates may ignore these facts in favor of complicated programs, miracle solutions, or fad diets, Powter actually tackles the behind-the-scenes issues -- and comes out far ahead of the pack.

TPOS is enlightening, educational, and inspiring. There are no miracles or fads included, but there is the elegant beauty of knowledge.
