Product Description Addicted? presents different ways to recognize the early and often subtle signs of addiction--much in the same way we learn to detect the early signs of cancer. But, unlike cancer, where people rush to get treatment as soon as they recognize the signs, an addiction typically is faced with great guilt and ambivalence. Addicted? provides questionnaires that screen for a wide array of chemical and behavioral addictions at all stages of development, and ends with a step-by-step guide for how to prepare oneself or someone else to overcome addiction.

Addicted? August 22, 2008 Addicted? is greatly helpful in identifying the often overlooked distinctions between excessive behaviors, bad habits, and addictions. The book highlights the danger of stereotyping addiction and addicts - especially that of substance use disorders (SUDs). In the impressive depth and breadth of her book, Dr. Freimuth offers a wonderful source of information for parents, health care professionals, and potentially at-risk individuals.
Addicted? August 7, 2008 The book "Addicted?" by Marilyn Freimuth, Ph.D that I had ordered from Amazon arrived. I was looking at it and my son came in to the kitchen. I told him the book was about identifying additions. He picked up the book and started to look through it. About 1/2 hr. later I looked in his room, and he was still reading the book!We had quite a discussion about the different addictions, including the section on Internet Sex Addiction. Michael's comment was... how could that happen...you are not even in the room...how could you get addicted to internet sex by typing? Of course with some investigation,he found out there was more to it! The thing he was most interested in, however, was the Alcohol Addiction. We had a good back and forth discussion about it. He imparted even more information than he ever has previously about drinking with his friends like how, where, and what.
I told a therapist about this incident and some of the things that my son and I have discussed, she said "good". I said "good?" She said it was good that he is so forthcoming with me and maybe more so than some teenagers are with their parents. She said it is possibly a sign that he is looking for limits or he would be more secretive.
So there is an example of how this book immediately affected our family in a productive way! We will read more and I am sure, learn a lot.
