2 out of 5 stars It's just ok   April 17, 2008

This book is written in a way, that makes it hard to follow, but the basic message is coming across. Everything written in this book seems to make sense, but it's a different story when you are supposed to apply them to your actual life.

4 out of 5 stars Great Analysis, but Not Specific Enough   October 11, 2007

This is a great book if you want a thorough analysis as to why people develop and perpetuate self-defeating behaviors. However, as far as correcting these behaviors, I did not find this book to be specific enough. To correct these behaviors, the authors say to rectify faulty conclusions (which was very helpful) and then come up with a replacement technique (which was not specific enough.) I feel like purchasing a book about your own specific self-defeating behavior would be better for finding a replacement technique because this book discusses self-defeating behaviors generally. For example, for a behavior like procrastination, no real ideas were given as to what could be an effective replacement technique. You can't replace procrastination with another replacement "activity" because the whole point is to get back to studying. (ie: for a compulsive shopper, instead of going shopping, the example was that she spent quality time with her kids.) Though this book has its flaws depending on what your self defeating behavior is, it is definitely an informative read.

3 out of 5 stars =Not Sure~   May 29, 2007

I stumbled upon this book after reading Dr Phil's Self Matters and Harrison M's Self Power for Teens; i found it informitive but trite as it lacked in originality and freshness. With that said, Milton does make clear the steps and keys to free yourself from habits, compulsions, feeling, and attitudes that hold you back - much like Dr Phil's 'be accountable attitude' and Harrison M's 'Powerful Change Techniques'. Furthermore, and in odd-counterpoint, i feel that Milton has gained a habit of gross generalization, which comes across in both impact and subtlness throughout his well-crafted prose. All and all, a good read, and a good stepping stone to other teachers ... make the investment although it may leave you unsure.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing   May 12, 2007

When I purchased "Self-Defeating Behaviors: Free Yourself from the Habits, Compulsions, Feeldings, and Attitudes that hold you Back" I had expected very this to be a slow process. Nevertheless, to my surprise this was an instant transformation. The book was written in a way that openned my eyes to just how easy it was to change or shift my mental conditioning for the better. I keep this book handy so I can refresh myself about some of the self-defeating behaviors and how they are associated with other things or beliefs. Outstanding book, I highly recommend it for someone that is ready to take that giant step forward to change their life.

5 out of 5 stars From a coach and athlete   November 24, 2006

This is a great book for homing in on the things in our minds and actions that keep us from really performing at our best. I have long been an advocate of changing to make things better in the sports arena and this book is a great tool to have available.
