Legendary sitcom stars John Ritter and Katey Sagal team up in 8 SIMPLE RULES ABC's hit family comedy that is laugh-out-loud funny. "If you make my daughters cry I ll make you cry." That's the rallying cry of Paul Hennessy. A little rusty in the parenting department Paul is forced to meet fatherhood head-on when his wife Cate returns to work. Two teenage daughters and a wisecracking son make Paul's new situation daunting but never dull. Cybill Shepherd Jason Priestley and Terry Bradshaw are just some of the guest stars joining the fun in Season One. After gaining fame as ladies man Jack Tripper on the 1970s sitcom Three's Company, John Ritter steals the show as a father of three--including two nubile teenage girls--on 8 Simple Rules... for Dating My Teenage Daughter. The first season, which aired on ABC during 2002 and 2003, introduces viewers to Paul (Ritter) and Cate Hennessy (Katey Sagal) and their precocious children Bridget (Kaley Cuoco), Kerry (Amy Davidson), and Rory (Martin Spanjers). When former stay-at-home mom Cate returns to the work force as a nurse, it's up to Paul to write his newspaper column at home on occasion and mind the kids. The first season deals with that uneasy transition. It's actually refreshing to see a family depicted where the parents don't always like the kids. Paul often jokes with Cate that he's mad she ever suggested they start a family. He also notes, "What's it called if you're damned if you do and damned if you don't? Oh yes, fatherhood."

As for the children, we've seen similar stereotypical characters on other sitcoms. Bridget is the 16-year-old blonde bombshell. Kerry is her awkward, brunette younger sister, and Rory is their kid brother who has the creepy habit of hiding in their closets. Paul's relationship with Rory is even keeled. But it's his daughters that he is trying to win over. They love him, but they're also embarrassed and befuddled by him. Just when he thinks he's bonding with them, the girls will sarcastically point out his faults--such as his being at least 100 years old. As he succinctly points out to his wife, "They live in my house, but they don't even like me. They're not kids. They're cats!" Though the show is big on comic moments, it also is generous in sharing poignant memories. When Paul looks at his girls, he doesn't see young women that even his friends think of as hotties. Rather, he still views them as innocent toddlers who looked up to and adored him. Sagal, who was so over-the-top in both looks and mannerisms when she played the matriarch on Married with Children, is a wonderful foil for Ritter. Beautiful, smart, and funny, she's a tough act for him to follow when it comes to being a stay-at-home dad. --Jae-Ha Kim

5 out of 5 stars Am I crazy?   July 16, 2008
I keep watching "8 Simple Rules" over and over on the Family Channel, and am saving this DVD (and future ones, I HOPE!) for the time when they no longer show them on the Family Channel. Problem is, I keep getting flak from my daughter and husband who can't understand why I watch the same shows over and over. Aside from the fact that I'm in my 50's and forget a lot of what I see, it's because this show was so totally laugh out loud funny. Never have I seen a sitcom that had so many hilarious lines in each episode. And, I think James Garner's addition to the cast more than made up for "Papa H's" absence. On that note, though, I never saw a cast member's death treated so realistically and poignantly as it was in Season 2 of this show. Please, hurry up with the release of the rest of the seasons! Absolutely one of the best sitcoms EVER!

5 out of 5 stars John Ritter was really a star   May 26, 2008
If you want to celebrate the life of John Ritter, this DVD is what you are looking for. He was a comedian and the 1st season of 8 Simple Rules shows him in one of his funniest works. Ritter plays the father of two teenage daughters who have regular teenage problems but the show works it in subtle humour and Ritter's over-jealous and bossy character on the show makes it much funnier. I was also surprised to see how great Kaley Cuoco is doing, too.
You could a little sad to know that John Ritter passed away on the set of this show during the second season but like I said, if you want to celebrate his life, this product is a good way to do so.

4 out of 5 stars Spade funnier than Ritter   April 21, 2008

This season is OK but I think that David Spade is funnier than John Ritter. A funny program with real teen problems.

Both Seasons are great - too bad they ended it due to Ritter's passing.

4 out of 5 stars 8 Simple Rules DVD   April 8, 2008
This is a great series. John Ritter was in his usual top form and so funny, it was delivered here within a couple of days. Great Job Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars 8 Simple Rules: The Complete Frist Season   March 31, 2008
As everyone knows 8 Simple Rules was on ABC 1 in the UK before Disney decided to pull the plug on the UK network channel. The show brighten your day every day and is belly tickling funny so when it was withdrawn from are screens the British public was in shock (well all my friends) and the days became dark again....

But the Gods of Disney have decide to put the first season on DVD! The show is the most funniest thing that I've have ever seen on TV! This show is so good that I can promise you your never get board of it.... I know that in 10 years time I still be watching this DVD!

Another great this is that Season Two is coming onto DVD too! but there is not a release date yet so it makes buying this DVD even better.

However if you live outside the USA like I do, you need to make sure your DVD player is set to region zero (any country) to play this DVD. It does play on Ubuntu Linux with the codec installed.
