A description of the journey December 16, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This is a very good read for anyone who would like to get a feel for what U.S. immigration was like in the 1840s. Only five of its 24 chapters are about the fateful fire and its aftermath. The first 16 chapters are about the emigration decision and the journey itself, and the last three include life stories and pictures of eight survivors plus the names of the saved and the lost. According to the author, "all of the events and names are factual. Much of the dialogue and journey descriptions were recreated based on the letters of other immigrants and pioneers travelling during the same period." It is very well done.
I was made aware of this book by a cousin who is a descendant of a Phoenix survivor.
