Excellent June 16, 2008 This book is a great survey of the many different factors, both internal and external, that go into being a successful language learner. As a long-time language teacher and ivy-league trained researcher, I see so much work done on these issues that is only written for the eyes of other researchers, but this is very accessible to the average person (teacher, researcher, or even adult planning to study a language) while still being a scholarly work. It gives lots of food for thought, and while it does not claim to have "proven" any causality (no research does), it does offer a lot of opportunity to incorporate findings into practice. From there, it's up to the reader to figure out the combination to one's own mental safe, per se. Kudos to Griffiths.
