Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
The second edition of the highly acclaimed American Accent Training, now on 5 audio CDs, is for foreign-born students and business people working, traveling or studying in the United States and Canada. Through extensive intonation and pronunciation exercises, students learn how to speak with a standard American Accent. At the same time, listening comprehension improves dramatically. Supplementary materials included detailed nationality guides for eight languages (Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Spanish, French, German, Russian and Korean), access to a comprehensive website, and referral to a qualified telephone analyst for an individual diagnostic speech analysis. Also included are colored markers for written exercises, and a mirror to practice accurate pronunciation.

2 out of 5 stars Not very easy   July 4, 2008

American accent could be very difficult to learn if you already speak English. I have an African-British accent. I bought this book 7 yrs ago and tried everything in there but I still found myself reverting back to my old accent..I took the class training on the book and my instructor took me through the required drills for 4 months.. yet I still have a pretty heavy accent.
The problem? There are too many instructions in the book to remember..too many things to remember in every conversations and often too complex for an average mind I guess..especially if you already speak english...

But could there be some key things that could make siginificant impact on one accent instead of having to learn hundreds of instructions to be remembered in every conversations? Maybe someone ought to check that?

There is certainly need for a different book for people like me.

I have noticed that its a lot easier for non-english speakers to learn american accent once they get to united states.

Perhaps, just having conversations with Americans, listening carefully and imitating works better on the long term than any book..or maybe developing a mindset to re-learn every pronouciation and sentence if you already speak english because what you already know makes it even more difficult to learn American accent.

I am still looking for ways around things..I will probably write a simple holy grail book on accent training when I eventually succeed.
Perhaps, a book on the TRICKS of learning american accent and not DETAILS of learning American accent..

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book, worth so much and cost so little   February 2, 2008

This book is excellent. I have taken a couple of ESL classes, and learned some basic thing. But I forgot most of the things when classes were over. with this book, I can repeat listening again and again. Not only that, the content of this book is also super. It covers more details and aspects than what was taught in my ESL classes.

the bad is I have several bad tracks on my CDs. My player always pauses on these bad tracks and could not go through.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good for ESL   December 18, 2007

I would like to recommend this book to ESL students. It helps me improve my accent and pronunciation. Learning from this book gives me lot more confidence to talk with native speakers.

1 out of 5 stars Not the best resource if you want to understand rules of the language   November 27, 2007

I have tried two products, and to be honest this one didn't fulfill my expectations at all. So, if you really want to learn and improve your accent and understand the rules of the language at the same time don't buy this product. The narrative is tooooo fast, so you have to pause like every 10 seconds which doesn't help at all especially when you try to concentrate. The information in the book is too extensive, and change subjects too fast. I don't recommend this product, unless your accent just need a "little work". As ESL person, didn't work for me !!

5 out of 5 stars This is it!   September 16, 2007

Great for English-as-a-second-language, or for those who just want to sound more American. American Accent Training is THE tool for developing your American Accent. I am American born, from the Midwest, so I bought it to help me learn how to speak better in my own native tongue. Most people don't realize that there is a unique, distinct accent that is truly American. And, contrary to popular belief, the American Accent once developed will make you sound more intelligent and confident. Most Americans want to learn Spanish or some other foreign language; I say learn your own language first before stumbling into something else!
