More than 150 years of photos of the cadets, the buildings, and the grounds of the Naval Academy June 26, 2008 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Lasting institutions, especially those as central to our history as our military academies, use their history as part of creating the identity and sense of purpose in its members. Photographs can be especially important because of their vividness and ability to "remember" buildings that have been torn down, changed, or simply aged. Over time they can capture how traditions have changed, how technology was actually used in earlier times, and even the young faces of important leaders we seem to remember as old men and women.
In the acknowledgements and preface the author, James Cheevers, notes the great changes at the Naval Academy and how fortunate we are that many of the changes took place during the era of photography. While most of the 197 pictures come from the Navy, others come from the Library of Congress and the National Archives.
The photos are presented in four parts: Pre-Civil War (1845-1865), Post-Civil War (1866-1894), the New Naval Academy (1895-1947) - this covers both world wars, and concludes with Modern Times (1948-1990s). In this HPO series, the introduction to each section is helpful and brief and this book is no exception, but the written material is about double that provided in may other books in this series. This gives us an insight into the story the photos are going to tell us. The captions are terrific and the photo selection emphasizes the life and training of cadets as much or more than it emphasizes the buildings and grounds, and I like that emphasis.
James Cheevers is an historian who has been associated with the U.S. Naval Academy Museum for four decades. Currently, he is the Associate Director and Senior Curator there and is active in civic organizations and the community life of Annapolis.
