Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
For more than 150 years, quilting has provided native peoples of America and Hawaii with a continuing ritual medium to pass on their traditional artistic and cultural legacies. This remarkable book features numerous quilts, essays on contemporary and historical quilting traditions, images and meanings, documentary photographs, as well as profiles of quilters around the country.

I must admit that until picking up this book, I had no idea that quilting was such an integral part of Native American culture. The little history we recieve on Native Americans had never touched on the power of quilts even within today's Native communities. MacDowell and Dewhurst have painted a comprehensive illustration of not only the beauty of Native quilting, but also the social importance of quilts as records and protectors of Native culture. The photographs and stories presented in this book are so eloquently presented that I could not put the book down. I leave it on my coffee table and have not ceased to attract the attention of every visitor.
