Product Description
Nothing is more comforting than a home-cooked meal. And the best home cooking starts with fresh ingredients found close to home with foods that are local, seasonal, and organic. Raised in her grandmother's Southern kitchen, Katie Lee Joel comes from a "family of great cooks and big eaters." And she knows exactly what appeals to the home cook: recipes that are delicious, easy to follow, quick to prepare, and made with readily available seasonal ingredients.

In The Comfort Table, Katie dips into her archive of family recipes and updates all the classics from her childhood growing up in West Virginia, and also creates some inventive new favorites. This mouthwatering assortment of more than 125 recipes includes Southern staples like Fried Green Tomatoes, Chicken and Dumplings, Peach Cobbler, Meatloaf, and the quintessential Pulled Pork BBQ, which stand alongside contemporary classics like Roasted Carrot and Ginger Soup, Citrus-Tarragon Mahi-Mahi, and Dijon and Pistachio-Crusted Rack of Lamb.

But The Comfort Table is about more than just good old-fashioned home cooking. It's about sharing delicious, healthful meals -- made with love -- for friends and family. Katie's rich assortment of recipes for starters, salads, soups, entrees, side dishes, breads, breakfast, desserts, and drinks, is accompanied by entertaining tips and anecdotes to delight the modern foodie. The Comfort Table is a comprehensive, unpretentious, refreshingly accessible guide to creating unforgettable meals for occasions big and small.

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes you just want something simple...   August 12, 2008
I recently picked up this book and I just love it. It's remarkably simple, which is what I like about it. I noticed there were some negative reviews about how amateurish it is, but you know what, why does a cookbook have to be rocket science in order to be considered well executed? Sometimes some nice, very basic and easy recipes are what people want and need when they come home and are exhausted. I like that these recipes call for few ingredients and most of them are already in your pantry. I picked this up particularly for the flatpie and the chicken pot pie recipes. Holy moly, talk about delicious! If you know anyone who is new to cooking, or just wants some very easy meals to prepare any day of the week, this book is perfect. I only knocked one star off because of the excessive amount of pictures of the author. She's a doll, but it's a little overly staged and just kind of obnoxious in general. But overall the book is great. Really delicious and simple food!

Update: Just made the meatloaf and mashed potatoes this past weekend. YUUUUMMMM!!!!

This is a great cook book. It is well worth the cost. Great recipes.

3 out of 5 stars Book on modeling or cooking?   July 19, 2008

I saw the author on Paula Deen and she was cute as a button. Her recipes are pretty basic, but half the book was devoted to Katie Joel, the model. They were great pictures, but heh, this is a cook book, for Pete's sake!

5 out of 5 stars Oh Wow!!!   July 12, 2008
This cookbook has inspired me to cook again. I don't eat red meat, so I was really in a rut trying to figure out what to make for dinner. I was chickened out! I just made the flat pie with sausage and provolone substituting hot italian turkey sausage. It was fantastic!!! This southern belle turned yankee really appreciates going back to my southern roots. Thanks Katie.

5 out of 5 stars Awfully Good Recipes!   June 27, 2008
Billy Joel is sure a lucky guy snaring Miss Katie Lee as his wife. This is a Southern girl who stays true to her roots and it shows in her delicious recipes. Her Buttermilk Pancakes with Caramelized Bananas are incrdible as well as her homey Chicken Pot Pie. This is a marvelous book to have in your collection!
