Product Description From America's Queen of Suspense comes a gripping tale of a young woman trying to unravel the mystery of a family tragedy -- a quest with terrifying repercussions. It has been ten years since twenty-one-year-old Charles MacKenzie Jr. ("Mack") went missing. A Columbia University senior, about to graduate and already accepted at Duke University Law School, he walked out of his apartment on Manhattan's Upper West Side without a word to his college roommates and has never been seen again. However, he does make one ritual phone call to his mother every year: on Mother's Day. Each time, he assures her he is fine, refuses to answer her frantic questions, then hangs up. Even the death of his father, a corporate lawyer, in the tragedy of 9/11 does not bring him home or break the pattern of his calls. Mack's sister, Carolyn, is now twenty-six, a law school graduate, and has just finished her clerkship for a civil court judge in Manhattan. She has endured two family tragedies, yet she realizes that she will never be able to have closure and get on with her life until she finds her brother. She resolves to discover what happened to Mack and why he has found it necessary to hide from them. So this year when Mack makes his annual Mother's Day call, Carolyn interrupts to announce her intention to track him down, no matter what it takes. The next morning after Mass, her uncle, Monsignor Devon MacKenzie, receives a scrawled message left in the collection basket: "Uncle Devon, tell Carolyn she must not look for me." Mack's cryptic warning does nothing to deter his sister from taking up the search, despite the angry reaction of her mother, Olivia, and the polite disapproval of Elliott Wallace, Carolyn's honorary uncle, who is clearly in love with Olivia. Carolyn's pursuit of the truth about Mack's disappearance swiftly plunges her into a world of unexpected danger and unanswered questions. What is the secret that Gus and Lil Kramer, the superintendents of the building in which Mack was living, have to hide? What do Mack's old roommates, the charismatic club owner Nick DeMarco and the cold and wealthy real estate tycoon Bruce Galbraith, know about Mack's disappearance? Is Nick connected to the disappearance of Leesey Andrews, who had last been seen in his trendy club? Can the police possibly believe that Mack is not only alive, but a serial killer, a shadowy predator of young women? Was Mack also guilty of the brutal murder of his drama teacher and the theft of his taped sessions with her? Carolyn's passionate search for the truth about her brother -- and for her brother himself -- leads her into a deadly confrontation with someone close to her whose secret he cannot allow her to reveal.

Deception is key May 16, 2008 This book earned three stars vs. a stronger rating as parts of the book were too contrived. Many supporting characters provided a great deal of breadth and let the reader speculate on who was responsible for Mack's disappearance. However, that much breadth didn't allow for appropriate depth. Some good red herrings thrown in to confuse the reader, which is always appreciated. Yet the end came together a little too tightly and the epilogue wrapped up the story like a gift the receive is expecting; there are few surprises by that point. The main character's emotions are also not explored in any fashion in the last few chapters, yet that would better end the storyline that plot updates. Overall, an easy read, some surprises, good library book.
Superbly Plotted, Deftly Characterized Missing-Person Mystery May 11, 2008 Don't miss this book!
Mary Higgins Clark fans will be delighted with this nicely told mystery, one of her very best. Families provide lots of drama for most people, and Ms. Clark wisely chooses to add family complications to increase the flavor of this excellent story.
What would you think of your only brother disappeared just before finishing college . . . except to make a brief phone call for Mom on Mother's Day? It's pretty frustrating, suggesting that he doesn't care about you at all. Sis is Carolyn MacKenzie, a bright lawyer whose clerkship has just ended sooner than she expected.
Carolyn decides to push brother Mack to permanently surface. He quickly sends a message to back off . . . but Carolyn is not going to do that. Badly dislocated lives are soon fractured in painful ways.
Other currents are moving swiftly in dark places, and soon there are other mysteries to solve. In the process, you'll meet a lot of vulnerable people with secrets to keep. You'll also meet some pretty questionable types. But who did what?
It's a great mystery premise to think about someone who is missing but stays in touch on Mother's Day. I had a hard time imagining what was behind such behavior.
I also liked the way Ms. Clark developed her characters. Lots of them are interesting, and you'll care about what happens to them.
But I must save my special praise for the mystery: It's hard to solve due to excellent misdirection and lots of subtle clues with multiple potential meanings.
Brava, Ms. Clark!
So good!!!!! May 10, 2008 This book was so good! I am an avid Mary Higgins Clark fan, and finally, after 21 books, I guessed the ending. It's another one of those, incredible endings that makes you want to find someone and just sit and discuss it for hours on end. While the book isn't "action-packed", the suspense is incredible, and after spending 6-11 at a dance, i slept for seven hours and woke up early on my precious weekends and read it.
STILL GOT IT May 10, 2008 Clark is back in stride with this one. Where Are You Now? is more like her earlier suspense novels, and proves she's still got it. The dialog is crisp, sparkling and true to type; she constructed the Manhattan police detectives with such skill I think they're still in my head. Clark switches from first person to third, and multiple points of view, carrying it off masterfully--not an easy thing to do. It gives the reader a three dimensional experience, plunging them deep into a suspenseful, captivating mystery. Clark is clearly in love with Manhattan. With a magic touch, she brings buildings, restaurants, apartments and the East River to life in her narrative. Take this one with you on vacation, it will keep you very entertained during down time.
Good alternative to television programming May 9, 2008 There is such an uproar for all the detective, crime and forensics shows on television that I found myself very pleased with this story as an alternative to the often times to graphic shows on tv.
You are kept guessing throughout the book. I frankly had one thought about how it would end but was then pleased that it actually went a different direction from what I had guessed.
I didn't give the book 5 stars because I thought it ended a bit to abruptly. I would have liked maybe a little more development of the last chapter before the epilogue. But, then again, I'm not a writer.
Mary Higgins Clark again does a fine job of providing a good bit of entertainment for those of us getting fed up with the fare on television.
