Product Description A gorgeously written novel that marks the debut of an astonishing new voice in psychological suspense
As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.
Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddoxhis partner and closest friendfind themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past.
Richly atmospheric, stunning in its complexity, and utterly convincing and surprising to the end, In the Woods is sure to enthrall fans of Mystic River and The Lovely Bones.

Ending is a let down. July 27, 2008 I'm ever searching for an exciting mystery written like a classic. (I'm so bored by the one-dimensional, juvenile, tough-talking macho cops). This story being touted as that great mystery written like a classic, and set in Ireland to boot, convinced my I was in for a great read. And I did enjoy a good portion of the book, but somewhere along the line I went from pleasure to "oh Lord, enough already!" with a subplot I couldn't care less about, by a ridiculous premise, by some unlikely situations, and finishing off with loose ends. I felt like crying "foul" at the end.
In the Woods and out again July 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There seems to be some unwritten law that if you have survived some bizarre or tragic childhood event, if your best friend goes missing, or you're the only witness to some crazed maniac's deeds - you'll grow up to be a detective, and those childhood events will rear up and strike again.
Ok, so we've been in these woods before, but in Ms French's hands they are beautiful, dense, imaginative woods. I could not stop turning the pages, the characters are beautifully drawn, the plotting excellent. This is a powerful new voice in mysteries, I cannot wait for the next book.

Excellent novel. I was amazed it is a first novel by Tana French. Well researched and well written. kept me involved from the first sentence. I can't wait to read the next book by this author.
Poor resolution of a good premise - very disappointing! July 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I concur with the reviewer from Seattle who rates the three "acts" of the book. The opening premise of the book was good, the middle dragged and the so-called resolution was very weak and disappointing.
aren't mysteries to be SOLVED? July 22, 2008 Very well written, so well that by about half way through, I was feeling the writing was almost a bit smug. A preview for how I felt about the author when I finished the book, or at least what got published, which isn't really a finished book. The ending is so frustrating, it made me want to bill the author for the 2 days of vacation I wasted on this book.
