An insightful and wonderful read! May 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Okay, I need to make an admission before I post this review: I know the author Bonnie Nester due to her wonderful stories she has had published in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. It should also be noted that I rarely post reviews on Amazon, but I just had to in this case.
As a coauthor for many Chicken Soup books, I have read tens of thousands of stories and have a keen sense as to what our readers would enjoy. They would enjoy this book, no questions asked. Bonnie's tellings about the life of her mother and her family's struggle to accept their mother's Alzheimer's had me both laughing out loud and in tears. The story is told so beautifully and had me hooked, so much so that I read the book over the course of two evenings.
My grandmother is in her late 80s, and even though she doesn't suffer from Alzheimer's, she does have her "senior moments" with memory loss. Bonnie's book helped me to understand and look at the "other side" of an aging parent or grandparent, sometimes from their point-of-view.
I highly recommend this book to all who has an aging person in their lives. You'll be touched by the story, as I was.

Excellent Book April 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent book. The author opens up a piece of her life and by the end of the book you feel like pulling up a chair at the kitchen table because you're part of the family. The book encourages readers to look for and appreciate the precious memories still waiting to be made with your loved one even after a diagnosis of Alzheimer's. It reads a bit like a Chicken Soup for the Soul book, except that instead of being stories connected only by a theme, each one builds on the other as we follow the author's mother, Ruth, from diagnosis to death. Woven into each chapter are bits of practical advice for everyone who has a friend or family member suffering from Alzheimer's. I strongly recommend it for those who have a friend or family member with Alzheimer's, and especially those who live in an area that lacks an Alzheimer's support group. Though everyone's situation is different, you can gain comfort and knowledge through sharing another person's journey. The chapter "A Letter Never Sent" gives some excellent advice to those of us who want to help, but don't know how. I wish this book would have been available when my mother-in-law was caring for a dear family friend with a related illness. This isn't a book that tells you what to do as much as it shows you what to expect through stories of the author's own experiences.
