Very useful and easy to follow October 29, 2008 This book provides all the information you need to start a business on ebay. I especially liked the chapter on "Business Entities: What Kind of Business Your eBay Business should be?" which discusses LLC and Corporation. This is a good all-round reference guide that also includes fill-in forms that you can use for your new business.
Not useful in the slightest ... already outdated before it hits the shelves October 29, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am extremely disappointed in Nolo. I have read three new books by Nolo in the past few weeks, and they all lack practicality and functionality. This one was the worst.
First, even though this book advertises as "over 300 pages of information", there is a LOT of wasted space. A LOT! Double-spacing, 15 & 16-point fonts, over-sized headers & charts, half empty & even completely blank pages, etc. This book easily could have been printed on 80-90 pages. This is an environmental nightmare - how incredibly wasteful! (Please note - this was not printed on recycled paper).
As for the content, the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the book is basically the eBay help pages reprinted. Seriously - it is almost word for word taken from the eBay help pages: How to Buy, How to Sell, How Feedback Works, etc. Yes, you can skim this information at no cost on the eBay site, if you need it (go to eBay, then click the "Help" button on the upper right). But only the most extreme novice would even need this information - if you've ever used eBay before, even as a casual user, very little of this information is going to be new to you.
Additionally, some of this information is already outdated. EBay Express no longer exists. Kijiji is dying, and not even worth mentioning - last time I looked, there were only 3 listings within 200 miles of my zip code.
And much of the information they have for 3rd party management tools is already outdated. Besides, it only has a one paragraph of each 3rd party management tool, which looks as if it's taken directly from their own web site. No useful reviews, no practical way to distinguish between services or figure out which fees apply to you. (For your reference, if you're looking for looking for 3rd party auction management tools, you can look them up yourself: Vendio, Auction Hawk, Auctiva, Marketworks, Ink Frog).
It does have some tax advice for the new eBay seller who has never before used a Schedule C ...but again, almost all of this information came directly out of the IRS instruction booklet for the Schedule C.
I've been using eBay for 10 years, but only extremely casually - what drew my attention to this book was the "interactive CD-Rom with 100's of live links". I buy &/or sell maybe 1-2 items per month, and thought maybe this book & CD would open up some new doors for me, and help me use the site more effectively. However, I didn't find a single item in the CD-Rom that was useful to me. I was at least hoping for some good tax advice, but as I said, most of the information is available on IRS forms.
I think I'm in a good position to know what beginners need to know, and what intermediate users are looking for, to take them to the next level. This book had neither. I guess there was a useful checklist on keeping track of expenses, and special rules on deducting cell phone use.
As you can see, I am struggling to find something good to say about this book, but I truly believe this is a huge waste of paper. I have basically lost all faith in Nolo (I used to be a big fan of their web site). They have obviously sold out, looking for a quick buck from book sales, with no concern about how many of these books will wind up in landfills, and how many of their customers (like myself) will become disenchanted with this poor excuse for a book, and never use them again.
If you have never, ever used eBay or the internet before, and want to get started, you may find some useful material in here ... though I would probably recommend the Dummies books instead. I give this a 1-star.
excellent October 24, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a super program. It is great for getting a lot of knowledge in one simple format. It is definitely the must have program for ebay sellers. A 5 star program
Interesting, but not too informative... October 16, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
There are a few good ideas, but frankly one could just follow eBay's wizard to complete the same outcomes. I was quite disappointed.
Very Helpful for an Ebay Beginner October 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book is what the title says--a book for a beginner starting up on eBay. I didn't think eBay was particularly difficult to do until I recently helped my friend set up a jewelry business. It's really not self-intuitive--many questions arise in the process--and it wasn't easy to use the site to find the answers.
When this book arrived, I found it a big help. Yes, some of the information is not the most "cutting edge", and the CD is unnecessarily repetitious in parts, but it was very helpful to have clear documentation that answered the questions (and, even when there weren't actual questions, gave the information that built confidence that you probably -were- doing it right.
This is a good guide for beginners. Definitely recommended.
