Unbeaten and ranked #2 in the nation the Buckeyes rolled into Michigan Stadium and moved the ball convincingly the whole game, but had trouble scoring. Michigan lead 15-12 midway through the 4th when the Buckeyes Jim Laughlin and Ernie Andria teamed to block a punt in the fourth quarter and Todd Bell returned the bouncing ball 18 yards for the game-winning score.

With an undefeated season on the line, freshman running back Maurice Clarrett brought a record crowd at the Horseshoe to their feet by shaking off a shoulder injury to rush for 119 yards, breaking Robert Smith's freshman rushing record, and catching a 26-yard pass to set up the game-winning touchdown.
