Product Description Detroit, the automobile city has always been an exhilarating place to live in with little time for boredom or melancholic contemplations. Ever since Henry Ford's dream of mass-producing automobiles became a reality, this enchanting city drew millions to it with its many fascinating allurements. The films on this DVD have done a marvelous job of capturing some of the hype and glory of Detroit in its heydays in a charming and entertaining manner. The Detroit Newsreels are especially fascinating, as they provide live action from the early years of the 20th century. You will witness some nostalgic shots of Detroit's citizens engaging in a wide variety of activities. Shots of exciting picnics, exhilarating motorcycle competitions, a heart-stopping police chase and a peek into the lives of men enjoying the hospitality of the State Prison, captured on this newsreel. My Dad's Company, a trademark Jam Handy production, provides an in-depth account of the Detroit Edison Company's activities. Handy presents a sea of statistical data about the manpower and materials employed in the production of electricity by the company in an absorbing manner through innovative reenactments, as only he can. Life for those serving on the Detroit Police force was far from being a dull, monotonous pursuit of culprits and this is exemplified in a lively manner in the clip entitled This is Your Police Station. Beginning with the careful selection of cadets, this documentary showcases the rigorous training the cadets undergo before they are incorporated into the Detroit Police Department. Yes, life in Detroit has always been exciting and you don't have to look beyond this fascinating DVD for proof of that!

Motor City July 29, 2006 I had no idea that there were so many interesting things goin on in Detroit. These films give you a good overview of the rich history of the motor city and show you how it became the automobile capital of the world. YOu also get to see a bit of how cars defined the lives of people in the city. All of these films are fairly old, but they are well preserved and give you an interesting sense of how detroit became one of the most important cities in America.
A Surprising Look At Detroit May 4, 2006 Given how poorly Detroit has been doing for the past twenty or thirty years it's easy to forget that the midwestern city was once one of the most prosperous metroploisis in the nation.
The way that detroit has fallen into economic depression lately makes these otherwise happy films filled with a certain type of meloncholy.
You get to see film after film about how great detroit is doing, how everyone has jobs, how they are making the best cars in teh world and how they were going to make all their residents rich forever.
It's not the detroit I expected to see but it made me realize how quickly fortunes rise and fall.
