Amazon.com Nutcracker: The Untold Story is an odd but satisfying mix of ballet, animation, and a symphony performance of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. The Minnesota Orchestra scores points for finding new ways to introduce symphonic music to youngsters (most notably On the Day You Were Born). This 40-minute presentation features animation of Maurice Sendak's illustrations created for the Pacific Northwest Ballet's version and rhymed text from E.T.A. Hoffmann's original tale. This production delves into the land of the seven-headed mouse king and the curse that turned the prince into a nutcracker (that's the untold part, dropped from the famous ballet). James Sewell's choreography and the lush voice of Keith Jochim (the narrator and Herr Drosselmeier) should keep kids entranced. All of Tchaikovsky's famous musical passages are here, even if they are heard out of context. There's a short "making-of" feature at the end of the tape. --Doug Thomas

Great introduction to ballet for children December 7, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been using this video in my teaching ever since it came out and neither my students or I have ever noticed the statues. I'm watching it with kindergartners right now and I'm looking for them, but don't see what you're talking about. I use this in conjunction with a new book by Susan Jeffers that's for children aged 3-8. I explain about this being the "untold" part of the story, but it also contains the main ideas from the ballet. I love the way they integrate scenes from the ballet with animated from the book, as well as video of the orchestra.
Disappointed November 4, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was excited to receive my copy in the mail. I have enjoyed using another Notes Alive video, "My Many Colored Days," with my kids at school, but not this one. I was disappointed to see some nude statutes in the background of one of the scenes. Believe me, my kids (elementary age) would see them too. The rest of the video was outstanding. I find it very unfortunate that because of some nude statutes, which could have been omitted, the video is unsuitable for my kids at school. My principal agrees. I would really like to see that scene edited so I could use it!
Very fantastic Nutcracker based on Hoffman's original story December 26, 1999 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Very fantastic Nutcracker based on Hoffman's original story. Ballet, animationed illustrations of Maurice Sendak are well mixed together. What I love most is that the story is love and brevity of the heroine! It shows well the heart and emotion of the heroine. And she is so beautiful and pretty! It also includes "making" of this video, which is very interesting. It's my and my 7-year-old daughter's favorite. My daughter loves it even though she doesn't understand English. I saw several Nutcracker movies and this is the best.
