In the 1880's, ski clubs flourished in Michigan flourished in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Scandinavian immigrants who worked in iron and copper mines spent Sunday afternoons taking long cross country treks on skis, called "tramps." Cross country skiing soon gave way to the more exciting sport of ski jumping, and by the turn of the century, nearly every small community had its own jump.
