An invaluable and core addition September 5, 2008
The use of the knife as a weapon of both defense and offense in military and martial arts personal combat is an essential survival skill. Now in a fully updated and expanded edition, knife fighting expert Ralph Thorn draws upon his many years of experience and expertise in "Combat Knife Throwing" from Paladin Press to provide the reader with a comprehensive and illustrated instruction manual for using the knife as a throwing weapon with an emphasis on safety as well as accuracy. All aspects of knife throwing training are covered including making a throwing knife, building targets, practicing a variety of knife throwing techniques that include both underhand, overhand, and sidearm throws. Of special note are the chapters on psychological and physical condition, hunting and recreational skills, and the newest 'cutting edge' developments in the art and science of weapons throwing. "Combat Knife Throwing" is an invaluable and core addition to any personal or professional Martial Arts and Military Combat reference collection.
Good book but a lot of theory March 4, 2008

This is a good instructional book on spear-type knife throwing but the author has never been in a knife fight or doesn't seem to train with other people so I'm not sure how effective his techniques are.
But I bought the book simply to learn to throw spear style, which it does well. The book has a lot of "fluff" but its' interesting. The actual technique is maybe 20 or 30 pages out of the 110 pages in the book.
I've been a circus-style thrower before reading this book and I also disagree with the author on a few issues regarding circus-style throwing. You only have to see Michael Pearl's knife throwing DVD to see that a circus style thrower can throw accurately at 40 feet.
Spear style throwing is better suited for combat and it is easier to learn than circus-style. I was able to stick targets consistently the first day using spear style but part of the reason may have been because of my previous knife throwing experience.
One last point with spear style throwing is the fact that the knives are harder to carry (and conceal) when compared to circus-style knives since the handle end has to be weighted with tape.
I found Cold Steel makes the best throwing knives for circus style throwing and they also work well for spear style throwing (when weighted of course).
