1 out of 5 stars screws fell out in less than 10 uses   April 1, 2008
live in ak. bought these at the beginning of the season. first set of ice cleats I've ever owned. spent the past 9 years up here walking on ice in bare shoes so i'm pretty good at walking on ice. as a result I've only used these less than ten times since I bought them. I pulled them out to go hiking this past weekend and I see that out of the 34 screws in the bottom of the 2 soles 7 have already come out. Now they want 11 bucks to buy more ice cleats and ship them up here. i think I'll go to home depot and try and match them up instead. In the mean time, I'm kicking myself for dropping 50 on these p.o.s's.

5 out of 5 stars Stabilicers grip the ice   January 12, 2008
STABILicers, X-Small, EXTRA SMALL

I've tried a variety of pull-on cleats for walking on ice and packed snow. Most of them don't stay on the feet, get easily damaged by rocks or pavement, or tear. The Stabilicers do none of that. I've had my pair over two years and just recently bought a pair for my husband. These cost a little more than what's available at the local hardware store, but they really are rugged and allow you to take a normal stride on slippery surfaces, reducing muscle fatigue and injury.

5 out of 5 stars Stabilicers Do Help   January 19, 2007

This product is easy to put on and gives confidence on snow packed driveways and streets. The full sole version which I purchased is flexible enough for bringing in the garbage cans, walking the dog, etc. I have recommended Stabilicers to friends who also are experiencing unusual, long lasting icy surfaces everywhere this weird winter.

4 out of 5 stars Great product for the winter, but could use a few tweaks.   February 6, 2006

I purchased a pair of the heavy-duty StabilIcers to take with me to Stockholm, Sweden, for the winter. I'm overweight, and have a knee problem that limits my stability quite severely on ice and slick surfaces. I have, in the past, used stretched-rubber oversoles with carbide tipped spikes (available for ~150 SKr in most Stockholm shoe shops). These have worked poorly; tough to get on and off while standing (basically, you really need to take off your shoes!), and tended to slip out of position on shoes.

The Stabilicers work like a charm! I feel fully confident striding around town, crossing ice / slushy snow with ease. They are much easier to put on and retain; it helps to have a bench to hike a leg up on, but it's not strictly necessary. They stay in position fairly well, and feel like an extension of my feet. As I've only been using them for a week, I have no verdict yet on the lifetime of the screws underneath. I suspect, however, if you use them as I do (mixed snow / ice / slushy streets and sidewalks) you will wear the screws down within a few months. Rest assured, replacing the cleats is a trivial process, and their replacement cost is fairly minor.

The drawbacks:
These things are NOT quiet. Locals (especially Swedes!) who know how to walk on ice and snow and don't have knee problems, will stare at you like you are a freak. Even the old people. Just grin and bear it.

These things do not fold up. The rubber is fairly rigid, and you really can't bend them in two to stuff them in a pocket when you go into a store. I usually carry a plastic bag in a pocket to shove them into when I go into and out of a store. Or stick them in my backpack.

These things cannot be worn indoors, at all. They will instantly put divots into linoleum (oops).

Improvements:
The only improvements I could suggest would be:
1) The toe strap; it only sinches across the foot. It would be nice if the piece that runs along the foot, from the front to the toe band, could also be cinched down and tightned. Since the StabilIcers are designed to fit multiple shoe sizes, this would be a really good feature.

2) The toe strap. Perhaps make it a bifurcated piece of fabric, instead of a single strip. More like a bicycle toe clip? It would make it easier to get them on and off.

Overall, these are a wonderful device that I'm getting a lot of use out of. They make it so that I can spend time in the outdoors during the rare days of sun during the Swedish winter. If you have knee problems, get yourself a pair of these!

4 out of 5 stars Takes the danger out of winter walking   January 14, 2006

If you walk in snowy places that get trampled, you've probably noticed that the trail turns into a long plate of ice that is hazardous and uncomfortable to walk on. Winter trails during thaws are often covered with sheets of wet ice, puddled ice and slick mud. Stabilicers make walking on ice easy and fun. The chamfered screw heads bite hard into the slickest ice giving you secure footing without strain. Even though they add weight, you'll probably notice that you'll want to go further because, your not as tired from trying to avoid falls and because it's just so neat to be able to easily reach places that used to be hazardous. It's sort of like being turned into a human fly. The rubber nubs that the screws are mounted on are long and give a better grip on the super slick mud that's commonly found mixed among ice plates and running water during thaw conditions. With just hiking boots I was sliding down steep mud. After strapping on the stabilicers I was walking down the same slopes under control.

I haven't used them much on icy sidewalks, but I imagine they're just as effective. Of course walking on concrete and tar is going to wear down the studs sooner compared to walking on ice and mud. Stabilicers come with replacement screws and more can be ordered.

Putting them on is easy but not as easy as I'd like. I'd rather have boots with retractable studs, but nobody makes them. I find it easier to get stabilicers on when seated, but still they take a minute or two so you probably won't always have time to fiddle with them and of course there will always be times when you don't have them and wish you did.

They warn you not to use these on certain man made surfaces and it's probably possible to hook a toe on a root and do a face plant but all in all this is a useful product and a fun toy that opens up winter to considerably safer exploration at a low price. I haven't tried the other type of products. Some of them look like they'd be easier to keep in a pocket, but from what I've heard they're not going to give you as good a bite.
