1 out of 5 stars Utterly horrible. Worst book I have read in years.   June 20, 2008

This is my first Grisham novel, and I must admit that I am not at all impressed. Throughout the book his narration is dry and unappealing, rendering visions of Robert Stack slowly explaining another boring "Unsolved Mystery". Very early in the novel, in the first act, this style of narration explicitly described how the story would end. Despite my early shock at reading that our antagonist would make back his billions and then some, I continued to read to see if the author could be so stupid as to tell the reader how the story would end before he had completed the first act.

This is not a case of being able to deduce what direction a tale will take based on the direction it has followed so far. No, Grisham explicitly tells the reader what will be the outcome of his story. Two examples: 1) He tells you, as the antagonist looses a billion dollars in one day, that he will win it back and then some. 2) He tells you, as the story behind purchasing the election unfolds, that the slick stooge of the corporate interests would be elected and reverse the decision at the core of this story.

Taking this novel as being indicative of Grisham's body of work, I will not be wasting my money on another of his books.

1 out of 5 stars What a Disappointment   June 19, 2008

I was so excited to read a new John Grisham but what a disappointing read. I felt like I was reading his highly biased opinion of the judicial system rather than a piece of excellent fiction. Mr. Grisham, please write a non-fiction book and share your opinions with your readers but don't try to influence us under the guise of "fiction". Better luck next time.

2 out of 5 stars "Forced Entry...to my attention factor!"   June 18, 2008

Dear John:

Well, I was glad to see you're back. But after reading THE APPEAL you should go back to Italy and regain some pasta-fueled "old skills"! Then give us something worthy of your past great works! And also, I know and work with lots of Attorneys and they are NOT all as you portray in this book! (Take al look at our mutual old Oxford friends, for example!)

Hey, now...I am a long-time fan, but this last one stinks-up my Library!

3 out of 5 stars Not the Old Grisham   June 18, 2008

Where is John Grisham? It just couldn't be him who wrote this book. When you compare this book to the Pelican Brief this one has none of the action or suspense I'm used to from such a great author. The idea of rich people "buying" a seat on the supreme court is very scary. And John shows us how easy it would be to do it. But a little more plot, characters with some personality, and a better ending would have made the time I invested better spent. I'm disappointed but still a fan.
