"Bo's Lasting Lessons" . . . for women! November 1, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My son and I fight over our copy of "Bo's Lasting Lessons" like it was a Harry Potter.
My son manages his high school's football team.
Me? One of the first stories I published was on the Michigan team that won Bo his first Rose Bowl. Later I met Bo's first wife Millie at a fund raising event.
Bo was no Tiger Woods. Millie told us that one of Bo's drives landed inside a golf bag sitting on the back of a moving golf cart . . . on a different fairway. Kind of like a quarterback who throws a spectacular touchdown pass to a tight end on a different football field.
Although I know women who embrace football the way I do, I also know many who make fun of it--its macho culture of hitting each other for the fun of it, swearing, and spitting on the plastic grass.
But football is an important culture in our society, one that every woman needs to understand even if she never stands in Michigan Stadium on a crisp fall day waiting for that adrenaline rush when the Wolverines burst through the tunnel onto the field.
Football is a culture of men. The companies where I've worked are more like Bo's teams than my church circle, my women's book group, my age-group swim teams, or my college water polo team. To get ahead at work, I need to understand the values learned in football, especially since I grew up pre-Title IX.
In the 1980s, I interviewed one of Bo's players, who gave up his shot at the pros, because the team needed him to switch to a new position on the line during his senior season. But he wasn't bitter. This is what Michigan players do.
For me, the best part of "Bo's Lasting Lessons" was learning on every page how Bo cultivated the concept of team in everything he did.
I envy that sense of belonging that is so rare--and so needed--in our culture, especially for us women who merely watch football instead of playing it.
A Must For Any Michigan Fan October 18, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this book from the introduction to the last page. It was very interesting how Bo and John Bacon put together this book from Bo,s words and John Bacons writing. This book is a must read for any Michigan fan.
Lasting Lessons October 17, 2007 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
Interesting read. The world was football-shaped for Bo, as every small detail in life had an analog to something that takes place on the gridiron. His style is an awful lot like listening to my dad. There were no life-altering pieces of wisdom, but many great examples of doing the right thing in your day to day life. Definitely worth the read.
Bo's Lasting Lessons: The Legendary Coach Teaches the Timeless Fundamentals of Leadership October 17, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I barely knew Bo 20 years ago and this sounds more like him than anything that I've read. It was almost like he was reading it to you. I have an MBA and have worked in strategy consulting and most of Bo's Lasting Lessons: The Legendary Coach Teaches the Timeless Fundamentals of Leadershiphis lessons in leadership can be applied to business (and life).
What a great read! October 15, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This book serves as a great inspirational/motivational tool, a behind-the-scenes history of Bo's tenure as UM's coach, and as an autobiography. My favorite part of the book was that it read like Bo's voice was narrating the book to you. The book has a great, natural flow to it, and every single one of Bo's lessons was backed up by a story that accurately illustrated the point he was trying to get across. A great read.
