A Great Follow-Up to The Kite Runner August 3, 2008 Just like with "The Kite Runner", for me, this book was great to listen to. I really like books on CD, so that I can listen to them in the car or while doing other things. Having the author read the book is not always a good idea. Just like having the writer of a screenplay playing the lead roll in a movie, it just doesn't always work out. In this case, it works very well. The author is able to say the names of people, cities, etc. correctly and that's very important with a book such as this. I was so glad I had the book on CD and not in paper form, because having a lot of "unusual" names to read gets a little aggravating for me.
A Thousand Splendid Suns did not disappoint. Having read (listened to) The Kite Runner, I was very anxious for the release of A Thousand Splendid Suns. Sometimes a follow-up can be a disappointment because the writing is simply not as good. . . or it's "over-hyped".. . . or your expectations are simply too high. That's not the case here.
With our men and women in uniform deployed to Afghanistan, I also feel that this book, along with The Kite Runner, is "required reading" for all Americans who want to have a better understanding of what Afghan's have gone through. Your heart goes out to the people of Afghanistan, but especially the women of Afghanistan.
The Kite Runner
A Woman's Struggle August 2, 2008 "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Haled Hosseini is a book for both men and women who are caught up in the illusory struggle of gender dominance. The book is extremely well written and I found it more moving than "The Kite Runner", which will always be one of my favorite books.
Hosseini's style is relaxed and not complicated. He has an almost Hemingwayesque style in his presentation and reads very fast. He includes cultural and Islamic words which broadens our experience and also lends to the authenticity of the overall experience.
The book is about the human spirit both male and female and exposes the reader to the sometimes cruelty and joys of life in the Afghanistan culture. Like Kite Runner it exposes you to the extremes of the Taliban way of life and the hijacking of a peaceful religion by radicals with a personal agenda. It also accents the tragedy of the male dominance at the expense of the women in this culture.
As a political observation, it is hoped that the women who live in this oppressive environment will one day temper the apparent ugliness, to westerners, this culture demonstrates.
Pleasantly surprised by this book August 2, 2008 When my book club selected this title for the July meeting, so soon after reviewing "The Kite Runner" I decided NOT to read "A Thousand Splendid Suns" - I felt as if I'd read enough about Afghanistan for the time being and wasn't really interested in purchasing and reading this book too. But after finishing the August book selection (The Last Lecture) - I was fidgety and looking for something to read. So I caved in and ordered this book. When it arrived I was still not certain that I'd enjoy it, but I was determined to muddle through. WOW! Was I surprised that I had it finished within TWO DAYS!
A Thousand Splendid Suns was, in my opinion, a much more compelling read than the Kite Runner. And I was pleasantly surprised at the authors ability, as a man, to write from the perspective of the female characters. I'd give this book two thumbs up!! A definite must read title.
A book for everyone to read July 29, 2008 A Thousand Splendid Suns is Khaled Hossini's best work to date. While the Kite Runner is ground breaking, this book is the one book everyone should read to understand what has been happening in Afganistan. After you read it, you will never be the same, will never think the same, and will be eternally grateful for the many blessing you have in the US or Europe.
so addictive, so inspiring, so touching July 29, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
After reading Kite Runner (highly recommend) I sought out A Thousand Splendid Suns. There is something about Khaled Hosseini's writing that is so addictive, so inspiring, so touching that you can't help but feel compassion for the young children in his stories. In Kite Runner we were introduced to two young boys, in A Thousand Splendid Suns we meet a young Afghan girl. Both stories are filled with hardship, with turmoil, with events that only allow us to glimpse the horrors of growing up in a war-torn part of the world. A must read!! Also, if you missed reading Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns, go and read it. Purple Hibiscus: A Novel It's so addictive. There is something about his books that bring you in and get you hooked. and I'm loving this one. Highly Recommend!
