Absolutely enchanting! April 21, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read this book in about a week. I didn't want to put it down once I started reading it. It kept my attention all the way through from cover to cover. I cried every time I read it. I was able to connect with several of the characters (especially Mack). I enjoyed walking through the experience and actually was able to learn a few things about my own pain through this book.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has suffered any kind of grief and loss and would like to reconnect with their Papa.
Want to jumpstart? April 21, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Do you want to jumpstart your life of Faith? Read the Shack. It will grip you at the very beginning with the abduction of a little girl by a serial killer. Then it will surprise you with the characters that become involved in the restoration of the grieving father.
Overall, The Shack has a Great Message April 21, 2008 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
The Shack is like no other book I've ever read. It takes you from the heights of a father's love for his children, to the deepest despair of losing a child, to the mind-blowing realization of the breadth of God's love. Supposedly the author is relaying a true story told to him by a friend, Mack. The story involves the abduction and presumed death of Mack's youngest daughter and the gut wrenching hopelessness and guilt that follows. But reality, as best we understand it, stops there. From that point, the book is a tapestry of people, places, and illusions all engineered by Creator God to break through Mack's "Great Sadness". There are far too many departures from common Bible knowledge for anyone who is the least bit theological to enjoy everything in this book. But, like any good sermon you might hear on Sunday, you have to take the good and set aside that which crosses the line in your mind. I was immensely moved by the lessons learned during discussions with the Holy Trinity. The author went through great pains to totally focus on God's desire to fellowship with man, rather than the futility of earning God's love by works. I hope I can take the lessons learned in this book and apply them to my Christian walk. We each need to get to a place where we can set aside our own independence, and rely totally on a relationship with our Creator. Unexpected April 21, 2008 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
A friend of mine read this before I did, so when I borrowed the book from her, she warned me to keep an open mind. Whatever this book had to say would be grossly out of the box and may change my way of thinking - my perception of God. I started reading the book but found that I couldn't get terribly far before having to take a break and chew on the profoundness of it. I ended up purchasing my own copy for the sake of being able to scribble notes in the margins and highlight to my hearts' desire.
Then I met William P. Young.
I hadn't finished reading the book at that point and so I didn't really know who I was looking at when I shook his hand. He came to my school on a speaking engagement. Throughout the week that he was at my school, I got to know the man and the story behind the pages. Paul (as he told me to call him) glorifies God for the amazing success of this book. He writes the same way that he speaks - with a quiet conviction - that God is real, God is powerful, and God is loving. Having the opportunity to get to know the author provided amazing insight into the story. I didn't finish the book until after he left, but my friend had been right - that I needed to keep an open mind, because with every turn of the page, something else would unexpectedly jump out. Practically every sentence contained a revolutionary thought. Every word conveyed a message unlike any other - a message of hope, of healing and of love.
will change your view of the nature of God April 20, 2008 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book was one of the most interesting and detailed descriptions of the nature of God, and how God deals in relationship with himself. It gave me a way to not only view the trinity with almost a visual, but gave me a great description for others. It will challenge your faith, and challenge your spirit, I dont look at life the same way. When all there is left is God it is he in who we must place our trust, he is wise, and he loves us, all we have to do is trust him. I loved the book, and I recommend it to all my friends.
