1 out of 5 stars Disappointing   April 28, 2008
1 out of 3 found this review helpful

Having never read any of the previous books by this author I was unaware of his style and intent. The story line is very interesting; however, if I wished a Sunday School class with my reading I would have liked this book but since that was not my desire this book is very disappointing. The situations of the story are over and over connected to the Bible and are repeated so often they make the book and the story very boring.

I am sure that there are many readers that would enjoy the supposed connections between the story and the Bible but I am not one of them. This story was written not for interest or entertainment but structured for justification of Bible prophecy. If you read this book with this prupose in mind then it could by enjoyable but that was not my purpose.

I do not recommend this book to anyone looking for entertainment. If it had been classified as political or biblical in nature then the story would have been more expected and probably more enjoyable.

I looked forward to this book and it was one of my major disappointments.

1 out of 5 stars Such Promise   April 28, 2008

This book started with some great promise - four cities in the United States are hit by nuclear bombs including L.A. where the president was to speak. The ensuing Constitutional confusion is captivating and the reader is swept into the mayhem. Beyond the tragedy, the remaining bits of the US government (Washington, New York and Seattle were also hit) must reform and also defend as well as strike back. There are several possibilities of who the perpetrators are, of course.

However, soon after that great start, two things become apparent.

If the reader has not read the preceding four novels in the series, he is lost. There are frequent references to prior wars and possibly miracles (the prior miracles are never described). The author assumes the reader has read the prior books and akes no explanation for what has gone on which is disappointing since the prior events are so important to understanding teh events and characters in this book. This is not a stand alone novel by any means.

The next apparent feature to the book is that it proselytizes more than the the proverbial Seventh Day Adventist on your front step. Virtually every section with Bennett in it contains Born-again Christian platitudes and attempts to convert friends (it is not explained why he such a "hero" - he does nothing in this book but preach). He is especially intent on this mission since the Bible makes no reference to America - therefore he surmises that America will only play a part in the "rapture" (when Jesus calls all true Christians "home").

Thus, Roseenberg conflates Christian Zionism and the rapture with a nuclear/political thriller. Unless you are into the religious part, this reads like a bad religious tract with some science fiction tossed into the mix. By the middle of the book, the plot loses all semblance to reality. Perhaps his earlier books could be described as "it is possible", but this one is over the top.

It is a shame that the early promise was not carried through. I did not anticipate picking up a religious tract when the book started.

4 out of 5 stars Recommend!   April 27, 2008
Keeping to JUST the book, it is scary, thrilling, and almost impossible to put down. I found myself skimming (just a bit) over the military terms(weaponry, ammunition, etc) because I'm just not acquainted with armaments. I've only read "Epicenter", and none of Joel's other works. I wish I had, in order. However, subscribing to his blog is even MORE thrilling, as it pulls in headlines from the world over, mostly the Middle East, and is much more disconcerting, because it is TRUE. If this is where the world is heading, I hope we are all ready, and Joel makes it clear how to be.

5 out of 5 stars A page turner   April 27, 2008
Another great story by Mr. Rosenberg. This book you will sit and read cover to cover never wanting to put it down. I have really enjoyed this series and hope he has many more to write.
