This book is a wonderful follow up to Enslaved by Ducks. This book is moving and fasinating. Bob Tarte is a talented writer. He has the ability to be real and funny as well as real funny!! I Highly recommend!
On my top ten list! May 30, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am a huge fan of Bob Tarte and have waited patiently for this latest installment. It felt like a family reunion from the first page and I was delighted to reaquaint myself with the plethora of characters we were introduced to in "Enslaved by Ducks."
I would have been perfectly happy with more anecdotal accounts of life with Bob and Linda and their barnyard petting zoo, as Bob is so good at nearly humanizing these various creatures. However, I was instantly taken with the sensitive way he recounted the death of his father and his mother's struggle with dementia and alzheimer's disease.
Bob knows people as well as he knows animals, which is truly a gift.

Another winner from Bob Tarte! May 26, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Fans of Bob's previous book, Enslaved By Ducks, will find Fowl Weather a must-read, as we delve deeper into Bob's further adventures (and misadventures) with the animals and people in his life. New readers will quickly become enchanted by the family, will laugh at the hilarious episodes and observations, and will truly empathize during the sad ones. Interspersed with original humor are periods of honest, soul-revealing tragedy; in fact, it is the complete openness and lack of guile with which Bob writes that really set his books apart from and above the run-of-the-mill, here-we-go-again pet books. From the steadying and loving influence of wife Linda, to the imperious interloper, Eileen, to "two-dimensional buddy" Bill, the humans (well, except in Bill's case, according to Bob's list of characters) in the story intertwine with the animals to form the perfect read. I've read and re-read both of Bob's books many times already, and am already holding my breath for another installment of updates on this already-beloved family. Highly recommended!
Funny and touching....A book for any animal lover May 16, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bob Tarte has a love of animals, a wry humor, and a gift for the turn of a phrase- a combination that makes for a good book. Yes, Fowl Weather and his first book, Enslaved by Ducks, are about animals but they are mostly about Bob and his encouters with beings of many species, including human, and the deep committment that traps him seemingly unawares. Sometimes touching, often funny, this book is a quick read and just the ticket for relaxing after a tough day at the office or after a day filled with animals struggles of your own!!
I hope this becomes available in audiobook - it would be just the thing to listen to on a cartrip with the family.
Creatively Imaginative... Thoroughly Satisfying! May 16, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Loss seems to be a recurring theme in Bob Tarte's new book, Fowl Weather. From personal articles that have been misplaced, mysteriously snatched, or deliberately hidden, to the passing of family members and soul-mate pets, to even minds with a few marbles gone missing, Bob writes about some heavy subjects that touch his life and touch us all, but he manages to keep the telling lighthearted and as hilarious as his first book, Enslaved By Ducks. To accomplish this is an art, and Bob Tarte is truly an artist with a gift of humor.
The human-animal connection comes across more vividly in his new book, and we also grasp a better understanding of the author's humanness and his interpersonal relationships. Another aspect that has developed from the last book to this one is how his keeping of pet birds leads him to an appreciation of all things avian and a realization that each bird in the wild possesses a unique personality and is special. You may never look at birds the same and might possibly become a "birder" after reading this book.
"Fowl Weather" is very real and thoughtful, and it surely does not fail us in the "funny" department.
