Inspirational! February 22, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I thought this book was a great read and I would definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone. If you're looking for a weight-loss book, this probably isn't the best book. It doesn't tell you how to lose weight, it just tells you one woman's struggle with weight and her overall well-being. You can take little tid-bits from the book that will definitely aid in your journey to weight loss, but essentially you need to find your own way - and the best way is starting with understanding your body and its specific needs. That is probably the most important thing I took from this book. So if you like success stories, simple healthy recipes, and heartfelt confessions this is the book for you!
Thought provoking February 14, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I could not put this book down and hated when it was over. I want to know more. I want to meet Susan in person. Be friends in fact! I can't stop thinking about her and her journey. It was a nice change from all those feel good no matter how fat you are books. Or a trillion dollar paid actor with every advantage known to man telling you how to lose weight. Get over it! This is the real deal. This is how she really felt. This is how any normal person would feel. I appreicated her honesty. I could relate to Susan. I've had my fair share of weight issues too. I've never been nearly as heavy but I've felt as antisocial. I actually walked a woman's dogs for her because she became too large to walk them herself. It was heart breaking. I could tell she was lonely. All she had was her dogs and she couldnt even care for them anymore. This happens all over the world. It's tragic! The story of Susan's mother was haunting. So many times while reading I wanted to give Susan a big hug. I could say so much more. Hope there's a #2! Thank you for a great book Susan!!
Beware, blunt and shocking... February 2, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I read this in an afternoon/evening and it has some painfully blunt, shocking moments that you don't expect the author to cover about her personal life as it relates to her life choices. Be sure to check out the before picture in front, and the after picture in the back (both black and white)...that is probably the best inspiration of all.
A Portrait of Courage January 28, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have just finished Susan's book and was impressed by her courage and bravery in recounting many years of pain. This is a story of triumph and will inspire everyone who reads it, whether their vice is food, or something else. Bravo, Susan!
This book and loss January 23, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This book is not a diet book. Susan doesn't tell you, 'do what I did, and you, too, will lose weight'. Instead it is a story of a woman, who because of pain and loss, entombed herself in layers of fat. How she fought her way out of that tomb and became a whole person is the lesson of the book. Now that she is whole again, and can better deal with pain and loss. A must read for any woman, and even some men. I read it in one sitting and was very moved.
