IT'S OKAY!!! September 17, 2008 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm not a literary giant but I thought this book was brilliant. To me McCarthy used the the most frightening and the most perfect setting for the story. Preparation and hope for the future is the message I received. What we try to do as parents is give our children love and preparation for their world, their road, when we're gone. Papa did it! It's OKAY was the key. The boy was the hope and he was ready. One of the best books I've ever read.
How could this be so far from the mark September 16, 2008 4 out of 8 found this review helpful
I read this book as part of book group. OMG! I thought this was hands down the worst book I ever read. Most people at the book group were very bland. The most they said was it seemed more like a short story than a novel. A few found the wording of the book very good. But to me it was the most annoying book ever. I can't believe that people use words like profound, masterpiece, moving. I thought it was a complete waste of my time and at times it was painful. The only reason I read it all the way through is I don't think I could fairly talk about it at the book club with out finishing it.
The Road--what will be, or what we can avoid? September 16, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Quite chilling. I read this book in two sittings, and I have to say that I was disturbed by it. I like to read a book that gives me a strong reaction--and in this case, Mr. McCarthy really made me think about the world and our part in its demise. One of the great reads I had this past year in my book club.
Already in my top 10 of all time -- and I'm not even finished... September 14, 2008 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
The paperback version I have is 307 pages long; I'm on page 279 and simply don't want to turn another page because I know it brings me closer to the end. And I do not want this book to end.
This is already a gripping and unforgettable story -- it reminds me of Neville Shute's "On The Beach" and William Brinkley's "The Last Ship."
Like those stories, this one teaches. By all means, read it -- consume it, devour it, own it, digest it, fathom it.
Worth Reading Twice! September 12, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is the type of book you don't want to put down. I enjoy reading books that transport me to another place. The writer does this with great descriptive writing that lets you see into this bleak, cold, ashy crazy world. While you never even know the names of the two main characters you feel you get to know them intimately and can't help but admire their relationship. Highly recommended!
