This is a book I will never forget... November 7, 2005 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book has touched my heart in a way I can't explain. I am simply crazy about dogs. My dog is named Sebastian and is only two years old, he is quite simply the love of my life-which drives my fiancee crazy!!! Marley made me laugh and still has me crying when I think about him. I suggest everyone buy this book and learn what life is really about through this wonderful animal and his loving owner.
DON'T MISS THIS ONE - IT'S A GEM ! November 6, 2005 307 out of 339 found this review helpful
Don't ever confuse Lassie with Marley. Minding was something Marley couldn't quite manage - this is despite obedience school and concerted efforts by his adoptive parents, John and Jenny. Marley was a Lab with few of a Labrador Retriever with few of a Lab's characteristics. He was 97 pounds of almost non-stop accidents waiting to happen. Actually, John and Jenny wouldn't have had him any other way nor would we. His heart was huge and his love boundless despite his lack of social graces (sniffing crotches is definitely unacceptable as is swallowing costly uneatable items).
In retrospect, John can remember Jenny's reasoning - they were newly married and she thought having a puppy would be good training to caring for children when they came along. He writes, "If Jenny really only wanted a dog to hone her parenting skills, I would have tried to talk her off the ledge and maybe placate her with a goldfish."
They both had full-time jobs and knew that a dog was a large responsibility. But, they both also had happy memories of having a dog when they were children. So, their decision was made and Marley was their pick of the wriggling, furry litter. Little did they know. (Even though upon first meeting Marley all but chewed his way through John's watchband.)
"Marley & Me" is so much more than the story of a lovable canine, it's the story of a family - how they grew together, their celebrations and their griefs. It's also a tale sure to provoke both laughter and tears.
Don't miss it, especially as read by the author.

Loved it! November 1, 2005 7 out of 10 found this review helpful
Absolutely the best book I have read in a long time. I laughed and cried, and cried some more. John Grogan puts into words what I could not for the love of dogs, the lessons we learn from them and how they can enrich our lives. This will definitely be my Christmas present to the dog lovers in my life! Thank you Mr. Grogan.
Me Too with My Noel October 30, 2005 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
I just started reading Marley & Me. The first chapter brought a few laughs, and the inside jacket cover brought a slight tear.
The cover reminds me of my mischevious, angelic Noel, my Golden Lab of just under a year. She's an expert at finding larger than life rocks to carry around the yard, chewing up every stick that she can find, and she never met a leash that she didn't es-chew.
I honestly don't know how to describe it. Simply amazing. October 30, 2005 19 out of 24 found this review helpful
I work at a Border's Books, and I closed on a Saturday night after only napping for 3-4 hours the previous night. I was planning on doing nothing but going home and sleeping for about 12 hours. I saw a few copies of this book on display and decided to borrow it - as employees can do - planning on reading it the next week. Before laying down, I was munching some fruit and casually opened the book up just while I was eating. About 3-1/2 hours later I had finished reading it. I hadn't put it down for 5 minutes. There were easily 20 times when I just burst out laughing, and no less than 10 times when I was doubled over with tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. Then I spent the last 20 pages with tears running down my cheeks from crying - and I'm a 33-yr-old single guy. It will not take you long at all to fall in love with Marley yourself. This book is simply amazing.
