Very Super Cute Book January 28, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've finished two projects from this book and the patterns are nice and esy to follow, as well as being very cute. I only with there were more of them.
Cute toys, a shame about the second half. January 4, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The first thing I'll say about Mr Funky's Super Crochet Wonderful is that the toys in it are super cute. This book includes patterns for 8 toys: an elephant, a French hamster (he has a beret), a monkey (or a kitten, if you make different ears), a panda keychain, Mr Funky himself (a bear), a hare (which becomes a bear with different ears), and a bunny, as well as a bear water-bottle holder. These are Japanese-style characters (the author spent her childhood in Japan, before moving to America) and are relatively simple to make. They are all made of simple shapes (mostly balls and cylinders), with no color changes, so are ideally suited to a beginner. After such a great beginning, however, it is a shame that this book is let down by its second half.
The second half of this book comprises a series of patterns for very similar-looking accessories, mostly hats and scarves. These are very ordinary looking accessories, with nothing cute about them at all. It is for this reason that I only gave this book 3 stars. I still consider this book worth buying, if just for the toy patterns, but I wish that the author had included more toy patterns and not bothered about the accessories.
Easy and Fun! November 2, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a cartoonist who was lookin' for a hobby that wasn't my full-time job. When I looked between knitting and crocheting, I found this book and was immediately sold on choosing that hobby.
I've been doing this crocheting thing for a few months, so I can tell you with confidence, there isn't a pattern in this book that is difficult for a beginner. I have found great joy in making cute animals for children and funky hats and scarves for friends.
This book is for the beginning crafter who wants more out of crocheting than granny squares and doilies.
just what I wanted October 21, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I've started crocheting toys because it's much easier than knitting them and have several Amigurumi books in Japanese. I needed help in figuring them out and this book does exactly that. Her patterns are written Japanese style with helpful chart and list of rows with number of stitches. Also everything is written out in English for those who prefer it t hat way. Of the accessories, I do need a water bottle holder and might go on to her scarves and hats too. Highly recommended and I hope she comes up with another book.
Super Wonderful!!!! October 19, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
OMG this book is so cute. Even the author's picture in the back is adorable. The projects are so much fun to put together and so easy. The descriptions are great and here's an exciting concept for those of us who knit and crochet - the yarn used in the projects is actually available without taking out a second mortgage on your house or driving 30 miles to the nearest specialty store!! I was able to drive to my local craft store and pick up four skeins of Red Heart yarn, for $1.99/skein and go home and stitch up my projects. Yay!! This is something that all crochet designers should take into consideration - not everyone wants to stitch up their cute little stuffed amigurumis with $20/ball alpaca yarn! But anyway, I digress. I've stitched two little Sebastien le Hamsters in two days and they're just so cute I hate to give them away, even though they're for my friend's daughter and I know she'll love them. I'd also like to point out that no where on the cover of this book does it say that it is patterns of amigurumi only. So if you buy it thinking such, you will be happy, or disappointed, to find out that only half is composed of darling stuffed softies patterns. The rest is great ideas for accenssories, and they're sure to please. This book is another really excellent addition to my piles of crochet books. I'm actually USING this book, that's how I know it was worth every penny!
