disappointing water bottle July 21, 2008 I purchased this bottle after the plastic water bottle scare came out. I read the reviews of how great the water tasted and no smell. When I received the bottle, I washed it by hand and let it air dry. When I smelled the empty bottle, it had an odor to it and I can't get rid of it. It's hard to describe the odor but it's almost like an (industrial) oil smell. I should have returned it but it's just sitting on my counter top collecting dust.
Kanteen cap July 21, 2008 I really like the Klean Kanteen however I purchased the litte black cap the twist on one.The cap has already broken wouldn't recommend this cap.
Great bottle for hiking, airplane and car trips, or just around the house. July 21, 2008 I love these bottles! I ordered the 40 oz size with the stainless steel cap. It's a bit heavy when it's full, but it's a great size for longer trips and for sharing. We also have a few of the 27 oz size for shorter trips and to fit in car cup holders.
I have found that the water stays cooler longer than with the plastic bottles (and of course you don't have to worry about chemicals leaching into the water). If left in direct sunlight, the water gets hot, but in shade or in a backpack it's fine. I haven't noticed a metallic taste. The bottle itself can go in the dishwasher, but the company recommends that you hand wash the cap to protect the seal. I had some minor leaking at the beginning, but I realized I wasn't closing the top tightly enough.
For airplane trips I take the empty bottle with me in my carry-on bag through security, and then fill it at the water fountains inside the terminal.
One problem -- it's really hard to drink out of in the car. The car must be completely stopped for anyone in the car to drink out of it. Otherwise we end up with water all down our fronts. I'm a bit clumsy and have dropped the bottle more times than I would care to admit. I've got some dents in the bottom as a result, but nothing that affects the use of the bottle.
I love the fact that it's all stainless so I don't have to worry about what it might be doing to me and my family. I had looked at the Sigg bottles, but I was concerned about the epoxy coating and aluminum, particularly long term. I felt like the Klean Kanteen stainless was a safer choice, and I'm very happy with the bottles so far.
Note that the default in stores and most online retailers is to have the plastic cap, and you have to order the stainless steel loop cap separately. HealthE Goods lets you order the stainless steel cap with the bottle and/or separately.
plastic lid broke July 19, 2008 I too wanted a healthier water bottle for my kids, and sending them to summer camp all day was the perfect excuse to spend good money on some. Unfortunately, my good money spent didn't equal a quality product. After only a week of using this bottle the part that you sip the water out of on the lid broke completely off. Sure, the water tastes a little funny, the bottle was noisy and it's way too cold to touch when holding icy water, but my kids didn't complain so I didn't let it bother me. But when my son came home and showed me the broken unrepairable lid I knew these bottles had to go back. I'm sad because I now need to find a suitable replacement (not a Sigg - it doesn't fit regular ice cubes, and I don't have room in the freezer to make special ice).
I love this canteen! July 19, 2008 I love this canteen! It's lightweight, easy to clean and carry and doesn't leak. The wide opening is great to load ice. It does sweat when it's hot and liquids don't stay cold long - even with the ice - but I slipped one of those can insulators on and it does the trick. It is smaller than I imagined so I'll be ordering another in a larger size. The seller shipped very fast and packed well. They'll get my business again.
